Getting the common cold is hardly an unusual occurrence. This sickness afflicts people of all ages perhaps more than any other health condition. Some people only get minor symptoms that go away within a few days. But other people can suffer significantly with a variety of ailments. It is helpful to understand what causes colds. Three viruses are the culprits: coronavirus, RSV, and rhinovirus.

How a person feels when getting the common cold

Having a cold is something that virtually everyone will experience at some point. Young children are more prone to it, getting the sickness six to 10 times a month. Adults may get two to four colds a year, while the elderly are less at risk. The symptoms usually go away after a few days, but some can persist for a couple of weeks.

A runny, stuffy nose is a common ailment with a cold. Coughing and sneezing will usually come with a cold as well. Many people will experience headaches or mild fevers. Body aches and chills can also be symptoms. For some sufferers, it may be difficult to breathe.

A look at the rhinovirus

This is the most common cause of a cold. Also known as RV, this virus is most active in the fall and spring. It can spread at any time, however, and affect people of all ages. It chiefly affects the upper respiratory tract but can also cause lower respiratory problems. In addition to causing the common cold, rhinovirus can cause other conditions such as bronchitis and sinusitis. It can also exacerbate issues such as asthma.

Keeping away from the virus

The rhinovirus is contagious and spreads by close contact. A person can catch it by coming into contact with droplets from sneezing and coughing. One of the most effective measures to combat it is to wash hands with soap for 20 seconds. It is important to do this after using the restroom as well as after sneezing or coughing. Speaking of this, when a person does sneeze or cough, they should do so by covering the mouth and nose.

Sanitizing contact points at home can also prevent the common cold. Homeowners can wipe down countertops, tables, doorknobs, and light switches. During the peak times of RV, people should be cautious about being among big groups. Sick people should avoid leaving home. Also, keeping away from those who are sick is vital.

Treatment

When RV hits and causes the common cold, there are ways to minimize the effects of the symptoms. Rest and fluids are essential. Taking over-the-counter antihistamines or decongestants can help too. A visit to urgent care may be necessary if the symptoms do not go away after a week.
